Digital Twin: the 4.0 road to process efficiency and product quality

The technological evolution underway is characterized by a shift from "atoms" to "bits". The economic reasons are linked to the lower cost of the bits, both in terms of "storage" and processing and transport. If it is possible to carry out operations on bits instead of atoms, companies choose this path.

Testing and simulating digital models of products is now a consolidated reality.

Today, however, we try to go further.

Some companies, for example, have for some years extended the use of the bit model of their products to their maintenance and control. When the product is sold, it is associated with a bit model that from that moment will be specific to that product, a digital twin, a digital twin.

The product made of atoms, contains a variety of sensors that in almost real time communicate with the digital twin, informing it of the use in progress

To deepen these aspects, the technological transfer and innovation, consortium company for innovation of the Treviso-Belluno, Verona and Venice Rovigo Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with CONSIDI organized the seminar "DIGITAL TWIN: ROAD 4.0 FOR EFFICIENCY OF PROCESSES AND QUALITY OF PRODUCTS

The appointment took place on Tuesday 7 May 2019 in Grisignano di Zocco, at the Considi headquarters.

The seminar was an opportunity to discuss issues related to the digital transformation of companies in a 4.0 perspective such as lean processes and predictive manufacturing, involving experts from the Universities of Padua and Verona. Some practical cases of digital transformation in the company have been presented.

Agility and Retrofitting in Mechanical Engineering

The additional 4th Open Seminar of Business Upper Austria within the NUCLEI-project dealed with the challenges agility and retrofitting for small and medium sized companies within advanced manufacturing.

Modernity and tradition do not only exist in art - they are also the daily companions in industry: modern management methods and tools and quality work by tradition, even with "old" machines. You will (still) find one in almost all workshops and production facilities in Austria: Machines from back then. One could also say in a less appreciative way that old machines are "brown field" in terms of software, and yet for the companies they are valuable pieces - no typos - valuable pieces. Modern management methods and tools and quality work by tradition, even with "old" machines. The company Faschang showed how it works on April 11th. While new methods and tools are implemented in the management, old plant components are generally overhauled by specialists - keyword RETROFIT - in order to serve the customers for another few years. In two exciting lecture parts, the challenges for the company were dealt with and how they will be solved together with experts. A tour of the Faschang Werkzeugbau area gave the participants the opportunity to get an idea on site of how quality from Austria is produced at the location.

Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis, a new path for manufacturing

19/04/2018 - CRIT Srl, Via Confine, 2310, Vignola – Modena (IT)

In the next decades, the transition to Circular Economy will represent a new paradigm for a sustainable and profitable growth, decoupling economic growth from the use of resource consumption.

The seminar will provide the key elements to understand the new industrial paradigm underneath Circular Economy and its potential applications in the context of manufacturing companies.

Firstly, theoretical principles and aims of Circular Economy will be illustrated by highlighting its role in the European agenda for economic development, and underlining its role as a lever for business management (design, servitization, reverse logistics). Emphasis will be given to the interconnections with the Industry 4.0 development plan and related technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 3D Printing, Big Data & Analytics, Clouds and digital platforms.

Moreover, an approach to Circular Economy based on life cycle analysis (LCA) will be illustrated. The LCA is one of the main tools for the assessment of resource use and process planning, making it a useful tool for the development of Circular Economy strategies.

Practical case studies will be shown, to demonstrate the feasibility of Circular Economy. In conclusion, a brief summary of the contents emerged during the seminar will be offered, focusing attention on the main actions and possible strategies to be adopted during the transition phase towards Circular Economy new paradigm.
